Almost all modern tractors can use a power take-off (PTO) to provide power to the supporting farm equipment. It is essentially a rotating shaft, usually at the rear of the tractor, which derives its power directly from the engine. To use the power take-off, you need to connect a special swivel bar (universal joint) between the tractor and the machine A machine like a hay baler, which has rotating rakes, wheels and gears inside, when it is mounted to the rear of the tractor and connected to the power take-off, at which point the power of the tractor drives the machine inside the baler, as well as driving its own wheels. This is why the tractor-powered machinery must be driven relatively slowly: a small portion of the engine power is transferred to the mechanical equipment at the rear.
